Proyecto de Investigación "Culturas urbanas en la España Moderna (siglos XVI-XIX)"

The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the interactions among Spaniards, Portuguese and Mbayá indigenous peoples in the Upper Paraguay region during the last decade of the 18th century. The Portuguese and Spanish interest in controlling the lands that lay between Villa Real de la Concepción in Paraguay and the Portuguese fort of Nova Coimbra in Mato Grosso resulted in an increasing relevance of the mbayá peoples. These peoples became a key element in the frontier, where they developed their own strategies to promote their own interests and goals. By examining both Spanish and Portuguese sources, our study furthers our understanding of their interactions in a frontier that we characterize as being essentially porous and dynamic, where the circulation of people and goods became a key feature.

Since the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, a firm base existed to develop Human rights law and to judge Human rights violations. However, these violations were frequent in the previous centuries, and the European colonies in America were a common scenario of violence against Indigenous peoples. How were these severe abuses addressed in the colonial context? An example of these brutalities occurred in 1796, when a group of Spanish landowners from Asunción del Paraguay slaughtered 75 unarmed Mbayá indigenous people. In this paper, I propose to examine and analyze the investigation that followed the slaughter and the judicial arguments that were employed during the trial to those implicated in the atrocity.

The study of the activity of the Society of Jesus in the Chaco region during the Early Modern period allows us to advance our understanding of the cultural interactions and exchanges that distinguished the frontiers of the European empires.
This paper focuses on the ability of indigenous peoples from the Chaco region to negotiate their integration into Jesuit missions and to recurrently renegotiate these conditions when conflicts aroused. Some of these conflicts, besides, were due to the difficulties deriving from the frequent cohabitation in the reducciones of various peoples or ethnic groups with no previous relation, which adds complexity to the process of cultural hybridization that characterized these missions.
By analyzing the process that led to the settlement of the indigenous in the missions and the way conflicts were solved, this papers aims at enriching the new lines of historiographic research that emphasize the porous and dynamic aspects of frontiers as opposed to the more traditional interpretations that stressed the rigidity of frontier and their function to separate or divide territories and peoples.

Las monarquías ibéricas realizaron durante el siglo XVIII importantes esfuerzos para acordar y definir las fronteras de las áreas americanas en las que se encontraban en competencia, firmando para ello los tratados de límites de Madrid (1750) y San Ildefonso (1777). Estos acuerdos se apoyaron en material cartográfico y, a su vez, favorecieron la elaboración de nuevos mapas que representaran los espacios demarcados por las partidas de límites enviadas para hacer efectivas sobre el terreno las disposiciones acordadas. La cartografía ofrece excelente información acerca del progreso del conocimiento geográfico y la percepción del espacio y el territorio en un determinado contexto social y político. Adquiere particular relevancia en las regiones de frontera, en las que constituía un instrumento más para materializar reclamaciones territoriales, instrumento a partir del cual es posible obtener información sobre el avance de la colonización, las expectativas futuras de conquista y las relaciones con las poblaciones indígenas.

En este artículo se analizan varios mapas del Alto Paraguay elaborados por portugueses y españoles a lo largo del siglo XVIII y se pondrán en relación con su contexto cartográfico, el contexto de relaciones interculturales locales y los tratados de límites. Ello permitirá discutir la influencia mutua que la cartografía y el contexto político ejercieron entre sí, y avanzar en la comprensión del empleo de la cartografía en el proceso de construcción de las concepciones de frontera.

Este artículo parte del análisis de las prácticas festivas civiles en el espacio urbano de la frontera austral del Chaco en el siglo XVIII para identificar las formas de participación nativa en las mismas, así como sus límites. El modo de entender la festividad en el ámbito hispano como un regocijo respetuoso con el orden social, urbano y político, chocaba con la percepción generalizada de que las festividades indígenas no eran más que borracheras desordenadas que era necesario eliminar o bien domesticar. A pesar de todo, estos espacios de intercambio cultural fueron escenario de apropiaciones y reinterpretaciones nativas de las prácticas festivas por las que se generaron nuevos significados que serán analizados.
ABSTRACT: This article offers an analysis of civil festivals in the urban areas of the Chaco frontier in the 18th century and identifies the forms of native participation, as well as their limitations. In the Hispanic spheres, festivals were conceived as moments of collective joy with a profound respect of the social, urban and political orders. This model differed deeply from the widespread idea that indigenous festivities were mere expressions of collective drunkenness contrary to any social or moral order, and thus should be either eradicated or domesticated. This article will show that the Chaco southern frontiers were areas of intense cross-cultural exchanges where native appropriations and reinterpretations of Hispanic festive practices produced new meanings.
RÉSUMÉ: Cette étude se centre sur les fêtes civiles tenues au XVIIIe siècle dans les espaces urbains établis aux frontières méridionales du Chaco ; on y identifie les formes de participation des populations natives, ainsi que leurs limitations. Dans la culture hispanique les fêtes étaient conçues comme réjouissance qui respectait l'ordre social, urbain et politique. Ce modèle se heurtait à la perception généralisée des fêtes indigènes comme simples ivresses collectives contraires à l'ordre social et moral ; il était donc nécessaire de les éliminer ou les policer. Cet article démontre que malgré ces perceptions, les espaces urbains constituaient des cadres d'intense échange interculturel et d'appropriations et réinterprétations natives des fêtes civiles où s'engendraient des nouvelles significations.

A lo largo del periodo colonial más de un centenar de ciudades fueron trasladadas en al menos una ocasión. Este artículo analiza el proceso de traslación de San Miguel de Tucumán iniciado a finales del siglo XVII, que se plantea de especial interés, pues tuvo lugar más de 120 años después de la fundación y suscitó un intenso debate en el seno de la comunidad. El estudio profundiza en los argumentos ofrecidos por los actores locales y por los representantes de la Corona a favor y en contra del traslado, argumentos en los que cobra gran relevancia el factor fronterizo. Ello nos permite constatar la existencia de profundas divisiones internas en la sociedad urbana colonial y profundizar sobre el papel de las ciudades en las políticas monárquicas en los confines americanos, donde funcionaron como instrumento de colonización y el control sobre un territorio y unas gentes que se pretendía dominar. ABSTRACT: By the end of the Spanish colonial period, more than a hundred Latin American cities had been transferred from their original location to a different one. This paper delves into the transfer of San Miguel de Tucumán at the end of the 17th century, which took place in the midst of intense debate at the local level. I analyze the arguments that the community, the factions within it, and the Crown’s representatives provided both in favor and against the transfer, which reveal the existence of important divisions at the interior of the urban colonial society. Furthermore, this research explores the role played by cities in the colonial policies that the monarchy designed for the frontiers of its Empire, where cities served as an instrument of colonization that sought to foster the control of territories and indigenous peoples.

Durante más de tres siglos la corona española se esforzó por mantener su presencia en lo que fueron las posesiones imperiales más alejadas de la metrópoli, las Islas Filipinas.
Las particularidades de aquellas remotas tierras hicieron que la evangelización supusiese una de las principales justificaciones, si no la principal, para explicar el interés del rey en conservarlas en el imperio.  Debido a esto las órdenes religiosas ejercieron una especial influencia en las posesiones asiáticas de la corona, actuando en muchas ocasiones como intermediarias entre los distintos grupos de población que habitaban las islas y que eran principalmente españoles, indios filipinos y chinos sangleyes. Pero las órdenes religiosas también actuaron como grupos de presión frente a esta compleja población produciéndose situaciones de conflictividad.
A pesar de los más de tres siglos de presencia española en el archipiélago filipino, el imperio hispánico nunca fue capaz de crear un sistema efectivo de colonización en las islas ante la diversidad de situaciones tanto económicas como sociales y culturales que unos y otros grupos de población no supieron o quisieron entender, presos de los prejuicios, la ignorancia, la avaricia, etc.
Con este breve estudio, que es parte de uno más amplio, me propongo analizar cómo el desconocimiento antropológico del otro, el desinterés por la cultura de un importante sector de la población como eran los chinos sangleyes, y la intransigencia religiosa de las órdenes, pudieron poner en jaque a la colonia entera por un problema tan aparentemente trivial como es el cabello.
Para llevar a cabo este estudio me he servido tanto de las investigaciones de expertos filipinistas y sinólogos como de documentación de primera mano procedente del Archivo General de Indias, consultado el fondo de la Audiencia de Filipinas, y del Archivo Histórico Nacional, para la documentación perteneciente a la Colección Documentos de Indias.

En 1789 buena parte de Europa se vio afectada por una de las crisis agrarias más rigurosas del siglo XVIII. En Asturias, si bien la cosecha de 1788 resultó escasa, los efectos de la crisis se centran en la primavera de 1789, y ésta no fue tan grave en lo que a mortalidad se refiere sino en cuanto a sus consecuencias económicas .
Para el estudio de esta coyuntura se ha recurrido fundamentalmente a las Actas de la Junta del Principado de Asturias así como a las Actas Municipales de tres poblaciones sobresalientes en la región: las villas portuarias de Avilés y de Gijón, esta última principal puerto de Asturias, y Oviedo, ciudad del interior y capital del principado. Entre las fuentes consultadas también se ha recurrido al Libro de Expósitos del Real Hospicio de Oviedo para el estudio de consecuencias sociales de la crisis.
Ha sido muy estimable, para la comprensión de la trama que rodea ésta y otras coyunturas de finales del Antiguo Régimen, la consulta bibliográfica de autores interesados por aspectos sociales y económicos del marco peninsular y asturiano de la época así como de aquellos autores que han permitido conocer las instituciones asturianas, en especial sobre la Junta General del Principado de Asturias. Entre el acervo de aportaciones destacan las de Gonzalo Anes, autor de Las crisis agrarias en la España Moderna (1974) y de Economía y sociedad en la Asturias del Antiguo Régimen (1988).

This study aims to know how communities were structured, according to their specificities and to examine how power was distributed in certain areas of Northern Spain in the late 16th century. This is part of an ongoing research for the completion of my PhD thesis. 

This study focus on the fact that the sense of identity itself might differ from the recognition of belonging by their own spheres of identity to which someone aspire to join, because that recognition was also a way to control the community, setting outside those inhabitants not meeting certain requirements, those considered "bad neighbors" or unwanted and misplaced.

It is necessary an approach from a gender perspective for a better understanding of the unequal political participation in the councils, representation of the community, the enjoyment of rights, etc. e.g., considering the particularities around the family organization and economical systems in the studied territory.

This research takes into account the unequal way to experience the neighborhood according to genders. Moreover, it made personality-identity to the community in the towns and villages of the Northern Spain in the 16th century.

I have chosen the town of Cangas de Tineo as the sample for this study aiming to find out the inhabitants' different areas of identity, not only from the urban core but also attending the wider periphery. 

Understanding the importance of the sense of belonging to certain groups as vital for the organization of  power in the area, in this case by two factions who were mainly led by important noble families, I wanted to look at the set of identities and feelings of belonging in several areas, especially prevalent in the rural periphery that surrounds the urban center.

The definitions of vicinity proposed by the central government, which pursued the realization of records to collect taxes, did not correspond with what the residents thought as fair. Therefore I want to approach the problem from an emic perspective, for which I have resorted to judicial sources.

Through the testimony of witnesses in lawsuits is shown how they talked about themselves so it is possible to estimate how they felt part of a place (a village, a parish, an open council, a valley, a council...), and whether the geographical distribution conditioned setting-up supportive  communities. We also want to know what degree of decision they reached at the municipal level in the village, if it was manipulated and by whom.

On the other hand, through supervenience of past traditions, it's possible to observe remains of different inter-municipal identities, which can be traced through the privileges that only residents of a few places enjoyed.

Finally, this study focus on the fact that the sense of identity itself might differ from the recognition of belonging by their own spheres of identity to which someone aspire to join, because that recognition was also a way to control the community, setting outside those inhabitants not meeting certain requirements, those considered "bad neighbors" or unwanted and misplaced as was the case of pastoralists in the present study.

El objetivo de esta comunicación es alcanzar un mayor conocimiento sobre la formación de facciones en el contexto de las tensiones sociales y políticas que observamos en el seno de ciertas  comunidades en la Edad Moderna.
Para este estudio contamos con las aportaciones de la labor investigadora de S. Kettering y O. Raggio entre otros referentes. También se ha llevado a cabo una labor empírica con documentación procedente del Archivo Histórico Nacional principalmente. El conjunto de informaciones analizadas se centra en la situación producida a fines del siglo XVI en determinados concejos asturianos aunque no por ello deja éste de ser un tema de calado general.
A la hora de acercarnos a la temática apuntada pretendemos fijarnos especialmente en el proceso de creación de facciones, poniendo el acento en el modo en el que la comunidad se veía enconada apoyando diferentes tendencias adversas, los modos de adhesión y resistencia a las mismas, los cambios de lealtades producidos y la repercusión de las tensiones provocadas entre las personas envueltas en la acción de las facciones así como su entorno.
